The Most Beautiful Swiss Books competition was launched
in 1943 at the instigation of the distinguished typographer
and graphic designer Jan Tschichold (1902-1974), and is held annually, building on its long and distinguished history.

A competition aimed at selecting and recognizing books for their ‘beauty’ will always be grappling with inherently subjective and unstable criteria of beauty. The juries of the Most Beautiful Swiss Books competition are asked to make a selection that is representative of design and publishing practice in each given year, that is contemporary and of its time, that is mindful of current trends and (usually) wary of fashions.
