We first found out about 2020Solidarity through social media – and as manager of a culture-focused space deemed to be non-essential by the government, I was both immensely encouraged by the campaign’s concept and impressed with the initiative they were taking.

In Japan, the government often works at odds with the science – our government chose to prioritize the Tokyo Olympics and the economy at the expense of our medical infrastructure, resulting in repeated state of emergency declarations. We are a very small space removed from the metropolitan center, and COVID made it a challenge for us to connect artists to different guests; these factors eventually led us to take an extended hiatus. We believe that these times call for each of us to really think about what we can do – we, for example, started selling sustainably-made natural wines as to help cater to everyone spending their time at home.

We find the 2020Solidarity Project and its diverse lineup of posters to be very exciting, and at the same time the project really reminded us of just how much influence these different artists have. I remember when the posters came in the mail from Germany, carefully enclosed in wooden boxes. We were overjoyed – it was like you could feel the warmth of their sentiment in the packaging. We’re so grateful to everyone involved in the Between Bridges project and to Wolfgang Tillmans – thank you so much.
