This roundtable brings together three operators of independent art spaces in mainland China, alongside Group Pi\u00e1oPi\u0101o\u2014a Paris-based diasporic queer collective offering a contrapuntal perspective. Speakers are the founders\/organizers of Stasis Space and OneiroSpace\/abC (art book in China) in Beijing, cuspdot in Hangzhou, and Group Pi\u00e1oPi\u0101o. Through this talk, attendees can get a snapshot of the current state of independent art spaces in mainland China.
\nPublishing is core to all four organizations. We will draw on operational experience to share governance and self-organization\u2014distinctive practices and difficulties. What attempts are spaces making in the face of diverse challenges? When work detaches from a fixed venue, how do small organizations sustain vitality? How do spaces build links between the public and the individual, and how do small-scale publishing formats\u2014unbound sets, modular inserts, reader-download editions\u2014support or constrain these efforts? Pivoting from practice to concept, we consider how \u201calternativity\u201d moves under current conditions.<\/p>\n

Lin Haodong
\nLin Haodong is an image-based artist, publisher, and the founder of Stasis Space. He graduated in philosophy from Fudan University and lives and works in Hangzhou, China. Years of constant movement and philosophical study have led to his interest in subjectivity and the individual\u2019s experience in the public sphere. His photographic work has appeared in Paper Journal, Phroom, Fisheye, Jiazazhi, IMA, Same Paper, and Photography of China. His artist\u2019s book Youth Practice Handbook (2023) is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art Library and Asia Art Archive.<\/p>\n

Zhou Yue
\nZhou Yue, Founder and Director of Art Book in China \/ abC Art Book Fair. She with abC team previously ran OneiroSpace, an independent bookstore and art space in Beijing. Zhou Yue is also an artist and musician.<\/p>\n

Wang Yiwei
\nWang Yiwei, an author of \u201cEpisodic Murmuring\u201d, lives in Sichuan and Paris. She is also a founder & operator of Group Pi\u00e1oPi\u0101o. Her work draws inspiration from urban spaces, local memories, and everyday experiences. Through diverse media such as games, printmaking, and rubbings, Wang explores the complex interplay between individuals and society. She is also engaged in participatory art practices. As one of her key methods, workshops extend her focus on memory, locality, and interpersonal connections.<\/p>\n
