As a publishing house, Nomad Papaya Books focuses on publishing artist books and zines by East and Southeast Asian artists who share the cross-border experience of living away from their homelands. Reflecting the artists’ backgrounds, our books are in most cases multilingual (usually combining English, Traditional Chinese, and either the artist’s native language or the languages present in their work). Translation and proofreading are central to our editorial process, which can be both a challenge and a learning experience.
Taking our publications “Mahjong: An International Manual”; “Ungenießbare Zeichnungen”; and “Moments before Tandav” as examples, we will share our publishing practice—how it relates to our choices of languages, how multilingualism affects the layout and visual aspect of a book, and the various challenges we encountered in the editing–translating–proofreading process.

Kenneth Ting-Yu Lin
Kenneth Ting-Yu Lin was born in 1994 Pennsylvania, United States and returned to Taiwan at the age of two. His practice mainly explores the power dynamic & geo-political histories behind images with a light way. In 2023, he founded “Nomad Papaya Books“, an independent artbook/zine publishing house focusing on local narratives and how identity forms in crossing border experiences.
