In this workshop, participants will learn how to make a small booklet using the Japanese stab binding (Wazōji) method. The Japanese stab binding is a common technique for binding single sheets of paper to create a side-bound booklet. While traditionally it uses 4 holes for binding (Yotsume Toji), this technique is highly customisable and adaptive for different binding needs or paper types. Participants will use hand tools to prepare individual paper sheets for hand binding, and take home the samples they make. Materials and tools will be provided, no previous experience required. However, this workshop is recommended for participants of 12+ years old.
Workshop capacity: 8 people
Duration: 30 minutes per session (2 sessions in total)
This workshop is held on a First-come-first-serve basis

Hei Lam Ng
Hei Lam Ng is a Canadian-based artist who loves making artist’s book objects. Her recent MFA thesis exhibition “a room is a book” explores the conceptual and physical relationships between a book, a reader, and the space that hosts the two. To share the love of bookmaking and a more sustainable practicing method, she has been teaching free bookbinding workshops using upcycled materials, facilitating a learning environment for others who want to explore making books. Hei Lam is the founder of “bocchi projects”, an artist’s group that features, encourages, and endorses small run book projects by independent artists.
