Culture Centre is a collective of photographers in their 20s and 30s—Seiko Watanabe, Naohiro Utagawa, Shota Tsukiyama, Taisuke Nakano, Daisuke Yokota—who came together in the aims of building a platform where they can express their respective activities while establishing a loose connection among each other’s works.

This exhibition, entitledBoring Books, is an exploration of ways in which a book can break free from the existing conventions of its form, such as the possibility to reproduce and distribute or how it tends to be edited under a select theme.

“Setting the theme as ‘What is a book?’ and presenting works deviating from it (a conscious departure from the theme).

Setting the theme as ‘What isn’t a book?’ and exhibiting works in line with it (exhibiting the absence of words or the absence of artworks in the exhibition).

Is there a loophole we can work with, situated right in between the two pathways?? A concept that can be communicated without straying too far from the fine line defining these realms…”

The inquiry of whether or not to consider their works as a book will pave the way for new forms of photobooks.

Culture Centre

Culture Centre aims to serve as one of the platforms where younger artists can introduce and distribute each of their works. It is a network of individuals who are loosely connected with one another and its defining statement or central propaganda is yet-to-be-determined. We aim for a shape where members can link up in a loose and irregular manner among themselves to take action collectively as the Culture Centre or where each member’s particular activities will be presented through the Culture Centre.
